Every day we have a new excuse for not doing the things we have always wanted to do. We convince ourselves through the excuses we make, as a way of having a justification for not following the path that will lead us to the realization of our dreams and goals. They condemn us to live a life we do not like, and the worst part of all is that we believe that those excuses are valid, blaming them for our failure, when in fact, we are the cause of our failure.

Why do we make so many excuses? Why do we punish ourselves in such a way? Why do we condemn ourselves to live a life we do not like? Why do we refuse to live the kind of life that will bring us everything we have been searching for? Simple: because it is easier that way. It is easier to make an excuse and do nothing than to do all the things we have to do to achieve our desired goals and make all our dreams come true.

Excuses negate responsibility, and it is the responsibility that separates man from the rest of the animal kingdom. Unlike other animals, we are responsible not for what we have, but for what we could have; not for what we are, but for what we could become. If we are to take credit for our successes, we must assume responsibility for our failures. Trying to hide our failures with excuses is like concealing a small hole in our garment with a large patch; it only makes the matter worse.

Following one’s inner voice implies taking risks – sacrificing short-term comfort, status, wealth, etc. for something uncertain per se. It seems easier to conform and settle for the comfort of our current lives, even if they make us feel emptier and emptier inside. But where there is no risk there is no reward.

You can be the hero of your journey. You have a personal myth that’s asking to be lived. Will you settle and die with your dream inside? Or will you choose the road less traveled?
