Day 287 (Two-Hundred & Eighty-Seven) of 365 days

Animals play an important part in our life. Although in this atomic age we have sputniks and rockets, yet we cannot do without the animals. They remain essential in every part of the world. The animals are a great wealth of a nation. They are the great friends and helpers of mankind. We must love and treat them well. They cannot speak but they also feel like human beings. Kindness to animals is a very noble virtue. God has made both humans and animals. It has been said, “He prayeth well who loveth well Both man, and bird and beast,” so, we must be kind to animals.

Animals teach us lessons on how to live. Some animals have very good qualities which people do not have, Actually some people don’t have these good habits. People fail to realise that we need animals as much as animals need us. If one dies the other dies too. Life is a balance between animals and humans. Besides, animals experience identical emotions just like human beings. We feel happiness, fear, pain, frustration, excitement etc. and so do animals. Sadly, only a very few of us care for and respect the feelings of animals. Animals suffer helplessly and silently because of our evil ways. This Earth is not ours alone. It’s the home of all living beings.

We should not stone dogs. We should not torture any bird or animal just because it is afraid of us. Some persons catch monkeys and make them do somersaults, jump and do all sorts of tricks before an admiring public who give money to the master of the monkey. Sometimes man makes tamed bears do all sorts of difficult feats before an admiring crowd of people, who give money to the master of the bear.

The philosophy of non-violence should not be interpreted as having relevance only to human beings. All living beings, whether animals like the cow, bull, goat, elephant, tiger or lion and all birds cannot bear the suffering of harsh treatment like beating, thrashing, and piercing with sharp instruments. Man, the most rational of all living beings are endowed with the sixth sense and he has the divine quality of mercy. Kindness and compassion are in his nature and he should put them to proper use. As supreme in the creations of God, he should justify that he is supreme by being kind not only towards his fellowmen but also towards the dumb animals and birds.
