Day 290 (Two-Hundred & Ninety) of 365 days
Having low self-esteem can be a horrible and detrimental way to spend your life. It often interferes with everyday situations, creating not only confusion but also a discouraging sense of hopelessness. People with low self-esteem often try to appear confident and careless. However, they frequently do things or say things that make them feel stupid, and somehow, not good enough to fit in with the rest of society
There is a saying that there is a no bigger enemy to a man than a man himself. This saying is fair for all genders though; indeed, no one can affect your life as much as you can do yourself—both positively or negatively. All of us have at least once met people who would have nice jobs, pleasant appearances, fulfilled lives—but who are chronically displeased with themselves, would tend to criticize or underestimate themselves, or to seek and find flaws in whatever they do. Such people create obstacles in their way—so one might say they are enemies of themselves, and the most common reason for such destructive behaviour is low self-esteem.
What people think about themselves seems to be based on facts, and we have got used to thinking we can trust our visions of who we are—but in fact, these are nothing more than opinions, and these opinions can be wrong. Such opinions usually exist as statements, stationed in our subconscious and affecting the way people consciously think and act. When these opinions are positive (“I am good,” “I am worthwhile,” I am creative,” “I am loved and respected”) a person has more confidence in themselves, is less prone to stress and self-ostracism, and tends to deal with life complications better; however, if the set of subconscious opinions is negative, a person may experience various difficulties in their life—and the larger part of these difficulties they create for themselves.
Low self-esteem does not strike a person out of the blue. Reasons exist in a person’s past that leads to the formation of negative beliefs. Usually, low self-esteem has higher chances to develop in a person if he or she was punished systematically in their childhood; alienated from peers at school, misunderstood, or did not meet certain standards; was openly abused or neglected; were an object of someone’s else frustration and distress; was deprived of warmth and interest; belonged to an ostracized social group, and so on.
Having too much self-esteem can be a bad thing. If I think I am better than everyone else and that I can be great at everything then it just makes a person that everyone dislikes. No one likes cocky people, I know I don’t. What I am saying is that you should respect and like yourself but not to the extent of being conceited. I know some people who are just depressed all the time. It makes me sad to see them without respect for themselves and just in a state of misery. Those with low self-esteem hurt themselves which could lead to hurting others. As they say “misery loves company.”
Over the years I’ve seen people with self-respect and confidence and I’ve seen those without. I will always be growing up with both kinds of people, those who have low self-esteem and those with high self-esteem. I believe those with “good” high self-esteem make it and live happily while others drift in their sea of self-loathing. I believe that in having high self-esteem I can live happily in my way, be a better person and be the lady everyone wants to be friends with.
