Lights On, Hearts Open: The year we truly live

Looking back at 2024, I can’t help but smile at the irony. You see, I’ve been a meticulous planner since I was 13 — the kind who mapped out their entire future in neat little boxes. While rummaging through my old secondary school English notebook, I found an essay where my teenage self had it all figured out: study Economics or Accounting at a federal university, graduate with first-class honors, pursue an advanced degree, and get married at 27. (Yes, I was that specific!)

But 2024 marked my second year of intentionally letting go of rigid planning. While I haven’t completely transformed into someone who embraces chaos, I’ve learned that abandoning grand yearly goals doesn’t mean living without direction — it just means embracing smaller, more manageable monthly, weekly, and daily intentions.

This year broke me open in ways I never expected. It became the year of tears, of finally allowing myself to be vulnerable, of admitting when burdens became too heavy to carry alone. Despite having shoulders offered to cry on, I realized how much I had been holding inside, refusing to share even with those who showed up consistently for me.

The weight of suppressed emotions from years past came crashing down like an avalanche. Instead of my usual approach of quickly moving past challenges, I found myself forced to face each emotion, one after another. It was during these moments that I discovered a resilience I didn’t know I possessed. The storms I had previously outrun finally caught up with me, teaching me that true growth often comes from weathering the storm rather than avoiding it.

Through this journey, I’ve emerged as someone different — stronger, more self-aware, and with an important realization: while I’ve always been guiding others to be the hero of their stories, it was time to become the hero of mine.

To those who found 2024 equally challenging, who discovered hidden parts of themselves — welcome to the club. And to those who had a smoother journey, treasure those sweet moments; they’ll be your light during darker times.

Looking ahead to 2025, I’m embracing a new philosophy, borrowed from someone I deeply respect: “If you’re not reserved with your heart content, you’ll complicate your journey beyond capacity. A fool with a closed mouth is considered wise.” This year will be about meaningful connections, genuine friendships, and creating beautiful memories, all while maintaining healthy boundaries.

To the friendships that felt overwhelming in 2024 — you remain precious, and I’ll continue cheering you on from a distance that serves us both better. To everyone who showed up for themselves this year — I see you. Your persistence in the face of adversity, your courage to walk in your truth — it’s all worth celebrating.

As we close this chapter, remember: that survival itself is an achievement. Whether you checked all your boxes or barely made it through, you’re here. You’re breathing. You’re growing.

You are, without doubt, absolutely amazing. Your strength inspires, your passion illuminates, your perseverance astounds, and your very existence enriches this world.

Here’s to not just surviving, but truly living in 2025! 🌟

The world is big enough for everyone to truly live!
